Why visit Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, NY? Because it has an overabundance of history as well as many great restaurants and many outdoor activities for all. Sleepy Hollow became famous because of a book by Washington Irving called The Headless Horseman. This area is located in Hudson Valley in New York on the Eastern side toward Connecticut.

Must do activities for history buffs in Sleepy Hollow, Tappen, NY and the surrounding areas.

- Washington Irving’s Sunnyside – Sunnyside was purchased by Washington Irving in the 1800’s where he resided until his death in 1859. The property was then purchased by John D. - Rockefeller Estate Kykuit – Four generations of Rockefellers resided in the Kykuit Estate. It’s a 40 room home that overlooks the Hudson River with expansive gardens and art. Located in Tarrytown, New York. Tour cost approximately $25.00 per person.

You can drive the cemetery or walk through it. This is free however they do ask for donations. The mausoleum of William Rockefeller in Sleepy Hollow built in 1920.
Just over the Governor Cuomo Bridge is Tappen, NY. Two must visits; site that Major Andre was hanged and The Old 76‘ House restaurant. Major John Andre a British Army Officer was hung in Tappen, NY as a spy by the Continental Army on George Washington’s orders in 1780. The site is located 42 Andre Hill, Tappen, NY. The monument was erected in 1879.

The Old 76’ House Restaurant is located at 110 Main Street, Tappen, NY. It is like stepping back in time but with better foods and drinks. The menu is substantial with plenty to pick from and also offers live music. The bar is small but feels like you could have been there with Washington and his regiment. It is a MUST-DO! www.76house.com for more information.

Let’s talk food next! My favorite topic.
- Decicco Market in Sleepy Hollow. Not only is the grocery part amazing; the top floor has a bar/restaurant with an amazing view of the Cuomo bridge. There is minimal food to choose from however the experience is worth a drink and appetizer.
- Breakfast I have two spots depending on if you want to sit or just grab and go. First, if you want to sit and enjoy a cozy breakfast head to Dobbs Ferry, NY and go to Dobbs Diner. Nothing fancy but very good. The second spot would be right in Tarrytown, NY The Bagel Emporiom of Tarrytown. Tons of options with bagels, eggs, lox, coffee, teas, muffins and more.
- Lunch and dinner ideas: The Sailhouse, Bridge View Tavern, Horsefeathers, Beekman Ale House, and Red Hat on the River which includes a rooftop bar.

Other things to do in the area:
- Governor Cuomo Bridge – The bridge has a 3.6 mile walking and bike path with six viewing areas along the way.
- October in Sleep Hollow – Parades, street vendors, live music, contest for all ages. Some roads do get shut down during certain times but still worth the trip.
- Farmers markets – Rain or shine during June through November. There are two in the area and both have amazing vendors with breads, pastries, honey, apples, live music and more.
