Explore: Key West
I am not even sure were to begin. My husband says Key West has his heart and I tend to feel the same way. Key West isn’t known for its food but more for the experience. Although, being foodies we did happen to find a few places along the way that we enjoyed greatly.
Driving from Miami is a long ride but worth doing at least once. You can fly in otherwise but you would be missing the longest bridge in the U.S. The bridge is 7-mile long and is a beautiful entrance into Key West. The old bridge that is visible during the drive used to be a railroad in 1912. Driving takes approximately 4 hours but that is without traffic, stopping or construction so plan ahead and know it may be a little longer from Miami.
We stayed in the Kimpton Ella’s Cottages on Simonton Street. It is in walking distance to Duval Street where all the action is but far enough away you won’t here the late night shenanigan’s.
Pricing approximately $550 and above depending on the room and the time of year. It was spotless, beautiful and the bed was amazingly comfortable. They also offered a nice continental breakfast but with lots of different foods, bagels, bananas, yogarts and more. Smart but lovely pool onsite.
Now, getting down to Duval Street, Mallory Square and much more to do’s.. Old time Mexican Cafe on Duval has amazing margaritas - grab one and start your walk down Duval.
Ernest Hemingway is a huge part of Key West that you won’t want to miss. His house is at 907 Whitehead Street. If you don’t go in at least walk by and take a peek through the fence. He also spent a lot of his time in Sloppy Joe’s on Duval Street. Food is oookay but the drinks are good!
Beach time in Key West isn’t as wild as Miami and much harder to find but we did find a few.
Smathers Beach, Higgs Beach, and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park
Smathers Beach is located off route 1a1 also known as S. Roosevelt Blvd. Higgs Beach is near the pier and closer to the most southern point in Key West. Also, has a restaurant right on the beach with easy parking. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is most likely walkable for you; it is at the end of Key West. All three great choices but our favorite is the Higgs Beach, really cause we don’t hate having a drink while we are at the beach.
